Is there a limit on exporting a WhatsApp chat?

WhatsApp's help centre doesn't state a message limit for exports. Third-party guides report about 40,000 messages without media and 10,000 with media, but that's reported, not confirmed by WhatsApp.
It does say that on Android, only the most recent media gets attached.

We checked WhatsApp's help centre on 31 October 2026. The reported numbers come from third-party guides, and at least one disputes them. We haven't tested them, and they may change with app versions. Silence isn't the same as no limit.
How do I tell if my export was cut short?
- Open the exported file.
- Look at the date of the first message.
- Find the earliest message in the chat itself, by scrolling or using search.
- If the file starts later, the export is incomplete.
Do this for any chat that runs into years. The free export checker shows the first and last dates; it reads the file on your device.
What if it was cut short?
- Use desktop or web. Choose Custom date range and export in slices, such as a year at a time. Label each file and keep them all.
- Try without media first. Media makes files bigger, and the reported cap is lower with it.
- Don't clear or delete the chat. The phone still holds what the file lacks.

Does a group chat have a different limit?
WhatsApp doesn't say. The help centre gives the same steps for group and individual chats.
Does file size matter?
Possibly. WhatsApp doesn't give a size limit, but email and messaging apps do. Gmail's is 25 MB for personal accounts.
Can I just export the last few months?
On web and desktop, yes, with Custom date range. The phone steps don't list a date option.
