Why is WhatsApp's Export chat missing or not working?

If Export chat is missing or does nothing, check Restricted chat first. WhatsApp says people in a chat with it switched on can't export that chat.
If it's off, try exporting without media, shrink the job with a date range on desktop, and update the app.
Export chat is missing or does nothing
- Restricted chat. In an individual chat, either person can turn it on. In a group, an admin does.
Turn it off on your main phone: on iPhone tap the chat, tap the name, then Restricted chat. On Android, in an individual chat, tap the three dots, View contact, then Restricted chat. - It's their setting. If someone else turned it on, tell them why you need the export before you switch it off.
- Business chats. WhatsApp says Restricted chat isn't available in chats with businesses that use Meta to store messages. We found no separate Business app export steps.
The export starts, then fails
- Choose Without media. Media is what makes the file big.
- Free up storage, then update WhatsApp.
- Try another destination: Save to Files on iPhone, Quick Share or Gmail on Android.
The file is too big to send
Gmail's limit for personal accounts is 25 MB, and it doesn't negotiate. Export without media, or save the file and share a link.
The chat is very long
WhatsApp's phone steps have no date range. The web and desktop apps do: choose Custom date range and export in slices, such as a year at a time. Label each file and keep them all. See the export limit.
Messages are missing from the file
- Disappearing messages vanish after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days, unless kept.
- Deleted messages usually aren't in the export.
- View once messages aren't exported.

Once it exports, save the file unchanged and don't delete the chat. Then make a pack. Back to the export guide, or find where the file went.

Why can't I export one chat but all the others work?
Probably Restricted chat. It's set per chat.
Does Without media remove any text?
No. It leaves out attached photos, video and audio. The messages are still there.
Should I wait until it works?
No. If the chat matters, screenshot it now and keep the phone: screenshot or export.
