How to export a WhatsApp chat to PDF with dates
Last reviewed 30 October 2026
Short answer: WhatsApp cannot save a chat as a PDF by itself. You export the chat as a text file ("Export chat", without media), then turn that file into a PDF. The export carries a date and time on every message. VaultXT does the second step on your own phone or browser, so your messages are not uploaded.
Step 1: export the chat from WhatsApp
Short answer: Open the chat, tap the contact or group name, choose "Export chat", and pick "Without media". You get a small .txt file with every message, its date, its time and who sent it.
On iPhone: open the chat, tap the name at the top, scroll down and tap Export Chat, then Without Media. Save it to Files or share it to yourself.
On Android: open the chat, tap the three dots, then More, then Export chat, then Without media. Save it somewhere you can find it.
Do this before you delete anything, change phones or switch on disappearing messages. An export only contains what is still on the phone.
Step 2: turn the text file into a dated PDF
Short answer: Open the file in VaultXT's pack maker, pick the messages that matter, and it makes dated, numbered PDF pages in your browser. It copies each message exactly as sent, including spelling, emoji and times.
Go to Make a pack, choose the exported file, then tap the first and last message of each moment you want to keep. Add one line saying what it shows. VaultXT makes three documents: the key messages, a timeline, and the full chat as dated pages.
Your messages are read on your device. VaultXT does not receive them. The one exception is voice notes, which are only sent if you ask for them to be written out. See turning voice notes into a transcript.
Why dates go wrong
Short answer: Most date problems come from the phone's date format. A date like 04/05/2025 can mean 4 May or 5 April depending on the phone's region setting. Check one message you know the date of before you rely on the rest.
The export copies dates in whatever format the phone used when you exported. That is usually fine, but three things cause trouble:
- Chats exported from phones set to different regions can mix formats in one file.
- A 12-hour clock (9:41 pm) and a 24-hour clock (21:41) look different but mean the same thing.
- Time zones. The export shows times in the zone of the phone that exported it. If you were travelling, say so in a note.
Pick one message where you know the real date, such as a booking confirmation, and check it matches the PDF.
Check the result
Short answer: Read the PDF against the phone before you send it to anyone. VaultXT also checks that every quote matches the original export, and you can run the same check on any pack with the free Check a pack tool.
Look at the first page, the last page and two messages in the middle. Confirm the names, dates and times match what you see in WhatsApp. If something is off, fix the export and make the pack again.
What a PDF does and does not do
Short answer: A PDF makes a chat easy to read, number and point to. It does not prove the messages are genuine or complete. Keep the original chat on your phone, and keep the exported file, in case anyone asks to see them.
A PDF is a tidy copy. If you are using it for a dispute, a bank or a court, ask what they want first. Rules differ, and some courts ask for specific messages only, not the whole chat. Questions people ask
Can WhatsApp save a chat as a PDF directly?
No. It exports a text file. You need a second step to make it a PDF.
Does the export keep the dates and times?
Yes. Each message has a date, time and sender name in the file.
Will my messages be uploaded?
Not by VaultXT. The file is read and the PDF is made on your device.
Should I export with or without media?
Without media is simpler and gives a small file. Keep photos and voice notes saved separately in their original form.
Is a PDF of a chat accepted as evidence?
That is for the court or body to decide. Check their own directions or rules before you rely on it.
